A Valentine's Day Story To Warm Your Heart....Or Kinkos Is The Fifth Ring Of Hell

15 February 2003-2:34 p.m.

I hope all of you out there had a lovely day yesterday, whether you are pro-valentine's or an anti-valentine. I had the day off work. So what did I do, you ask? I did work for the job that does not pay. I went and spent a wonderful hour at Kinkos. How does that place stay in business? I have never been treated like quite so much of an idiot as I was there. I am capable of using a computer, a printer, and a copy machine. I am a functional adult in these areas. Yesterday I had two things that I needed printed off onto cardstock. I went to Kinkos, because I personally did not have any cardstock, and I didn't feel like going into work. I've never had to do this before, so I have no idea how it works. I walk in, look around, see nothing obvious. I decide to ask the ever so helpful man behind the desk. "Oh go over there" (vague pointing to another corner of the room) "log in and send it to fireyx." Um...okay...what? I wander over to the direction he was pointing and find some computers. To make them work I need to insert my credit card. Great. Except this is going on an account. I'm not spending my money. So I wander back to the helpful man. I explain my problem. He takes me back over to the computers and uses his card to log in, says "there you go, just bring back the card when you're done" Great but what am I doing. Sending it somewhere. I admit I was feeling flustered, but had the man said, "go to print it and choose the fire printer" I would have understood. Just "send it to fireyx" didn't mean anything to me. So I call him back over and ask, and at this point I become an idiot to him.He walks me through how to open word, pick print, seems surprised when as soon as he says go to word, I realize I have to send it to a printer. Fireyx is a printer! Got it. His opinion of me gets worse when I try to give back his card. I do what I need to do, but where do I pick up my copies? Do I need to pay for the time on the computer? Where is he so I can give him his card? I end up with a different employee who takes the card. I tell him that I just sent some documents to be printed I need to give this back. He scans the card, and gets very confused. Am I printing color? No. But this is a color document. On publisher? Um...No. It takes this man and the other one to figure out that I didn't save anything to the card, I am mearly trying to return the card. They take it back. I'm still not sure where to go to pick up my copies. I go to the front desk. Tell the oh so helpful girl there. ANd beging my long, long wait. I should have brought a book. They send the request on to the printers. My 36 pages then take 45 minutes to print out. Apparently they have the slowest copier on earth. These were very simple, black and white, word documents. I could have done it faster if I had gone to the store, bought cardstock, driven to the library and copied them there. Be assured that I will buy cardstock in the near future.

Continuing with my long entry....The evening got better. That Guy came over and cooked a lovely dinner. And then we watched a movie with one of my roommates. Then we all watched the musical episode of Buffy at one in the morning. Much fun.

Tonight I will go watch a production of A Doll's House. What a great show for Valentine's weekend. You thing your relationship is bad? Well take a look at this one.
