Grumble, Grumble 11 March 2003-11:58 a.m. Rumbling and grumbling in community theatre. I missed the board meeting last night. I know, I know, bad front of house, bad. But I was still on vacation, my week did not start until this morning. So since I was not there, I missed the discussion and the ensuing reactions to a slight problem. We've had a director cast himself in a show, without prior board approval, when in our bylaws this is stated as not allowed. So blissfully unaware, I open my email and get the director's response. I had no idea what was going on but the email was certainly an upset message. Thus began my moring of finding out all that had happend. And here I thought that nothing big would happen at the meeting, it's next month that the play reding committee reports. Sorry I missed all the drama last night. Now the board feels like they were lied to and played, and the director feels like the board is insulting him. Nobody is happy and I sincerely hope that it doesn't adversly affect the show. I know that casting it has been hard, and I had heard grumblings of dscontent before this. Apparently it all came to a head last night. The sad thing is, loosing this director will be a shame. He's been a big part of T&G and from his letter it seems he's going to take his ball and go home after this show. That's too bad, becasue I think he's done a lot for the theatre, but I also think that the rules are there for a reason and if we make an exception this time, we'll have to next time. If we do that, why have the rules in the first place? *sigh* I know this entry doesn't make a lot of sense, it wouldn't unless you know all the people invovled. I certainly am not going to start naming names, so this will have to remain slightly confusing. I just needed to write about it. Of course on the plus side it makes any of the problems on the show I'm working on seem small. We've finally got an entire cast, and by the end of this week perhaps we'll have the whole show blocked. Oh yeah, my other job, the one I'm paid to do, that's going well too. |
